Get Ahead of Year-End Burn Out. Written by maryBeth Hyland

How to Overcome End-of-Year Burnout by Aligning with Your Values

I used to think end-of-year burnout was just part of what was required if you wanted to be successful.

December shows up… and suddenly it’s deadline season, party season, family season, goal-setting season, and somehow also “be magical and grateful 24/7” season.

And of course, my ego had a full-on judgment script ready to loop on repeat:

“If you don’t do it all, you’re failing.”
“If you say no, you’re letting people down.”
“If you slow down, you’ll fall behind.”

Sound familiar?

Here’s how it used to play out for me:

  • ⌛“Crush those year-end deadlines and prove you’re capable.”
  • 🫡“Say yes to every invite—people will remember and be hurt if you don’t show.”
  • 📅“Plan the entire next year right now or you’ll wake up on January 1st as a swamp goblin.”
  • 🍫“Treat yourself to all the goodies… and ignore the fact that your body is quietly begging for mercy.”

Then January would arrive, and instead of feeling inspired… I’d feel fried.

If you can relate, here’s something important:

It’s not just “you.” Holiday pressure is real, studies show that nearly 9 in 10 U.S. adults report experiencing stress during the holidays.

But here’s what I’ve learned (the hard way):

You’re not drained because you’re doing too much.
You’re drained because you’re doing too little of what actually aligns with your values.

The things that light you up connect you to your purpose and make you feel alive. That’s where your energy comes from.

Reconnect with What Matters to Prevent End-of-Year Burnout

This time of year, it’s so easy to get swept up in the “shoulds.”

You say yes to things that don’t align with your values—or worse, violate them—just to keep up appearances, meet expectations, and keep the peace.

Sometimes you don’t even realize it’s happening because you’re so busy going, going, going.

This year, let’s do it differently.

📝 Create Your Drain/Fill List

Grab a piece of paper. Divide it into two columns:

Drain | Fill

1️⃣ List What Drains You🪫

Write down anything that depletes your energy—tasks, people, environments, habits.

Examples:

  • Overcommitting to social plans
  • End-of-year work chaos
  • Being “on” all day with zero recovery time
  • Doom-scrolling (yep, I said it)

2️⃣ List What Fills You🔋

Write down what energizes you, grounds you, and makes you feel like you again.

Examples:

  • Quiet mornings
  • Meaningful time with the people who feel like home
  • Movement that feels supportive (not punishing)
  • Nature, creativity, prayer/meditation, music—whatever reconnects you

Note: You might have a “both” list too (some things are filling but also draining). Only you can name that honestly.

💞 Connect Each Item to Your Values

Now take it one layer deeper.

Go back through your list and connect each item to a value.

  • Fills usually mean your values are being activated.🔋 (YESSS.)
  • Drains usually mean a value is being ignored, violated, or neglected. 🪫 (Womp.)

Example:

  • 🔋 Fill: Deep conversation activates my values of Connection and Authenticity
  • 🪫 Drain: Surface-level small talk for hours straight violates my value of Connection and Authenticity

Not sure what your values are? That’s a sign you’re not broken… it’s a sign you’re ready to come home to yourself. Check out our free values quiz and see what you uncover here.

📋 Make Your Game Plan

Now that you know what drains you and fills you, reflect on how to increase the fills and decrease the drains.

🔋 Increase Fills

Ask yourself:

  • What fills can I lean into more often?
  • Where can I create actual space for them?

Example: Put a recurring 10-minute “recharge” block on your calendar like it’s an important meeting with your most cherished client (because it is).

🪫 Decrease Drains

Ask yourself:

  • What drains can I eliminate or reduce?
  • Where do I need a boundary to protect my energy?

Example: Decline one thing this week that feels like an obligation instead of a joy.

Pro Tip: Start with the low-hanging fruit. One small, consistent shift changes more than one dramatic overhaul you can’t sustain.

Finish the Year with Intention (and Start 2026 Like You Mean It)

The end of the year is the perfect time to pause, reflect, and reconnect with what truly matters.

Because when your values and your choices line up, you stop living like you’re constantly behind… and you start living like you belong in your own life again.

And if you want support actually doing this (instead of just saving this email and hoping motivation tackles it for you later 😉)…
