How Dr. Seuss’s Timeless Wisdom Can Transform Your Workforce on National Dr. Seuss Day
March 2nd is “National Dr. Seuss Day” where we honor the birthday of the magical-thinking legend who made us all reflect and understand our humanity just a little bit easier.
Whether we read Dr. Seuss books to our children or had them read to us, Dr. Seuss still remains one of the most widely revered authors for children across the generations for decades. His whimsical life lessons take some of the most complex human experiences and break them down in the most familiar and welcoming way.
On this year’s Dr. Suess Day, I got to thinking about how true his most commonly recognized quotes apply in today’s workforce.
When I read Dr. Seuss’ words, I hear him talking about…
Vision: “It’s not about what it is, it’s about what it can become.” When an organization has a clear vision of what they are working towards, a sense of purpose is ignited and people can more easily find passion in their work.
Values: “If you don’t stand for something. You’ll fall for anything.” Values are the guiding principles for the way in which you accomplish your work. They define appropriate behaviors and make decisions easier to make. Without clearly defined values and behaviors that are in alignment, there’s no internal compass for success.
Caring: “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, Nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” Without truly caring, meaningful work does not get accomplished. The hardest battles are fought by those who care a whole awful lot.
Simplicity: “Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple.” We so regularly complicate the solution. Sometimes going back to basics IS being innovative.
Authenticity: “Today you are You, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is Youer than You.” When you hide your true self to “fit into a role” you are ultimately robbing your organization of your greatest superpower – being yourself! When you own your gifts, you add valuable perspective and talent to everyday experiences.
Empowerment: “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go.” When you’re empowered to take on the tasks at hand, you don’t need to waste time second-guessing yourself! Work is more efficient and engagement soars!
What do you think? Has Dr. Seuss inspired you?
