The Hidden Gift of Getting Sick: What Your Body May Be Trying to Tell You
I don’t know about you, but nothing reminds me how much I take my health for granted quite like getting sick.
When your body is functioning “normally,” it’s so easy to move through the day without thinking about it.
You wake up.
You breathe easily.
You move around.
You get things done.
You make plans.
You follow through.
You assume your body will just keep showing up for you.
And then suddenly… it doesn’t.
Recently, I got sick, and it was bad. Even the slightest movement wasn’t possible without feeling terrible. It forced me to slow all the way down.

Not a cute little “take a nap and drink tea” kind of slow down.
More like cancel the plans, move things around, let go of the timeline, stop trying to push through, and actually listen, kind of slow down.
And I’ll be honest, that can be really hard.
It can feel triggering.
Overwhelming.
Frustrating.
Even scary.
Whenever James checked in on me, I kept saying, “I’m really scared right now” because I’d never had that kind of extreme pain hit me so fast and take me down so hard. 😰
When your body says, “Nope, not today,” all the parts of you that are used to being productive, dependable, helpful, and in motion can start to panic.
🥺There’s the guilt and grief of changing plans.
🥺The buildup of getting everything back on track as quickly as possible.
🥺The frustration of not having the energy you’re used to.
🥺The disappointment of having to pause what you wanted to do.
🥺And the humbling reminder that you are, in fact, human.
But underneath all of that, I kept feeling this deeper truth:
❤️🩹 My body was not betraying me; it was communicating with me.
And the more I listened, the more I realized that sickness can carry its own kind of wisdom.
Not because being sick is fun, convenient, or something I would choose. But sometimes the body has to get louder when you haven’t been listening to the quieter messages.
One of my favorite quotes is, “Your body speaks to you in whispers, and when you don’t listen, it screams.”
And mine was screaming like an over-caffeinated rock band doing soundcheck in my bones.

When you ignore those messages long enough, the body eventually finds another way to get your attention.
Your body is always speaking to you through your energy. And the invitation is to listen before your body shuts everything down to be heard.
Because there is such a gift in remembering how sacred your health really is.
How much of a blessing it is to wake up with energy, breathe clearly, eat normally, move freely and do the things you want to do.
Sometimes sickness brings you back to gratitude for the things you forgot were daily miracles.
So whatever your body is saying to you today, I hope you listen with compassion.
Not judgment.
Not annoyance.
Not shame.
But with the loving awareness that your body is on your side.
It is always trying to guide you back into balance.
And sometimes the most healing thing you can do is stop pushing, soften your expectations, and give yourself full permission to be human.
I made this guided meditation to help you reconnect with your body when it’s sending you a message that things aren’t okay:
