Do This to Live a Simple Life. Written by James Hyland

How to Set Boundaries to Protect Your Time, Energy, and Wellbeing

I’ve got some unfiltered truth for you today. You down?

Here goes…

If something in your life isn’t working, change it.

If something is draining you, stop giving it your energy.

If you keep saying yes when every part of you is screaming no, say no.

If a relationship only works when you abandon yourself, put yourself first.

If you keep waiting for someone else to give you permission to live differently, stop waiting.

Life can actually be pretty simple.

The only way to make it possible? Boundaries.

Now, if reading that made you bristle a little…

Or you thought, “Easy for you to say.”

I get it.

Because there was a time when I would have thought the exact same thing. For most of my life, I thought boundaries were for other people. I had been programmed to believe that being a good person meant saying yes.

Doing more. Helping more. Being available. Being dependable. Being the person everyone could count on.

I wore that like a badge of honor.

Until I realized I was so focused on being a good person to everyone else that I was being a pretty terrible person to myself.

And here’s what surprised me: When I started taking better care of myself, I didn’t become less helpful. I became more helpful.

When I protected my energy, I had more of it to give to the people and work that actually mattered.

When I stopped saying yes to everything, I could show up more fully for the things I did say yes to.

When I prioritized my own wellbeing, I performed at a higher level.

That’s when boundaries finally clicked for me. They weren’t about shutting people out. They weren’t about caring less.

They were about creating the conditions that allowed me to care, contribute, and perform without abandoning myself in the process.

And when you know what matters to you. When you know what you’re available for and what you’re not.

When you know where your responsibility ends, and someone else’s begins.

Life really does become a whole lot simpler.

The problem? Simple doesn’t always mean easy.

You can KNOW you need to set a boundary and still stare at your phone for 20 minutes trying to figure out how to word the text.

You can KNOW you don’t have the capacity to take on one more thing and still hear yourself saying, “Sure, I can do that.”

You can KNOW someone’s behavior isn’t okay and still find yourself making excuses for it.

You can KNOW what you need…

…and still struggle to actually ask for it.

Because the moment you start setting boundaries, emotions tend to show up.

Fear: What if they’re mad at me?

Guilt: What if I’m being selfish?

Anxiety: What if this turns into a confrontation and our relationship gets worse?

Shame: Why can’t I just handle this?

Self-doubt: Am I overreacting?

And suddenly that “simple” boundary doesn’t feel so simple anymore.

So if you’re not even sure where you need a boundary, here’s a good place to start:

1. Notice where you feel drained. 👀

Pay attention to the parts of your life that consistently leave you depleted, resentful, frustrated or stretched too thin.

That feeling can clue you in that something you deeply value isn’t getting enough space.

Maybe work keeps creeping into family time. Maybe you’re constantly helping everyone else and never have energy left for yourself. Maybe you’re saying yes to commitments that have very little to do with the life you actually want to create.

2. Identify what you want more of. 🔍

Instead of only asking, “What do I need to stop doing?” ask:

What do I want to make more room for?

More time with the people you love? More creativity? More rest? More focus? More adventure? More peace? More time doing the work that actually lights you up?

Boundaries become a lot easier to understand when you know what you’re trying to protect.

3. Ask what boundary would create room for it.❓

Maybe it’s not checking email after a certain time. Maybe it’s declining the next request that comes your way instead of automatically saying yes. Maybe it’s protecting one evening a week for yourself. Maybe it’s finally having the conversation you’ve been avoiding.

Because boundaries aren’t only about what you’re saying no to.

They’re about what that no allows you to say yes to.

And when your boundaries are rooted in what matters most to you, they stop feeling like arbitrary rules and start becoming a way to create the life you actually want.

Of course, knowing that doesn’t magically make the fear, guilt or anxiety disappear.

That’s where practice comes in.

And that’s exactly what the How to Set Boundaries Bootcamp is designed to help you do.

You won’t just learn about boundaries.

You’ll look at the beliefs that make them hard to set. You’ll connect your boundaries to what you actually value. You’ll learn how to communicate them clearly without overexplaining, apologizing or trying to control the other person’s reaction.

And most importantly, you’ll practice with boundaries from your real life.

Because there’s a big difference between understanding boundaries intellectually and actually being able to say:

“That doesn’t work for me.” “I’m not available for that.” “I need to think about it before I give you an answer.”

Or simply…

“No.”

There’s also another layer I want to support you with. Sometimes you know exactly what the boundary is. You know why it matters. You even know what you want to say.

And something inside you still hits the brakes. That’s why when you sign up for the How to Set Boundaries Bootcamp, I JUST added a MEGA BONUS🎁 where you’ll now also receive an Emotion Code session with me to support you in releasing emotions that feel like they’re getting in the way.

Maybe it’s fear, guilt, rejection or anxiety.

The goal is to support you in both understanding the boundary and working with what comes up when it’s time to actually set it.

Because eventually, boundaries really can make life simpler.

You stop spending days obsessing over whether you’re allowed to say no. You stop agreeing to things and resenting people afterward. You stop expecting other people to magically know what you need.

And you start making clearer choices about where your time, energy and attention actually belong.

If you’re ready to practice doing that in your own life, join the How to Set Boundaries Bootcamp for less than one therapy session and support from now until the new year.
