How I Healed My Body, Mind, and Spirit to Overcome Chronic Pain and Regain Freedom
In my late 20s, my doctor told me I’d likely end up in a wheelchair for the rest of my life. I had so much body tension.
I’ve been an athlete my entire life. I need to move to stay sane. But after a debilitating back injury, doctors said I’d likely need pain medication and multiple surgeries just to move. They told me I might never live the life I envisioned for myself again.
My life as I knew it felt over. But deep down, I refused to accept that reality.
That diagnosis hit hard, but it also sparked something inside me. That injury became my wake-up call.
It reminded me of a promise I made as a kid after seeing my grandmother lose her vitality, debilitated in a hospital bed.
I swore I’d do whatever it took to keep my body free, healthy, and strong.
I vowed to prioritize my health. But it took my injury to fully understand what that meant.
Fast forward, and that injury didn’t just impact my body; it changed my mind. I realized that freedom isn’t just about being physically fit—it’s about being emotionally and spiritually aligned. Health wasn’t about being the strongest or fastest. It was about freedom—freedom in my body, mind, and spirit.
And the result?
When I first went to the doctor when I had my injury and they took an x-ray, they told me I had the spine of a 70-year-old and no cartilage in my lower back.
Then, after healing my mind, body, and spirit through holistic methods, I went back for another x-ray, and my doctor couldn’t believe what he was seeing. My cartilage had fully regrown. He had never seen that before and thought the only way to “fix” me was with surgical methods.
This experience taught me the power of tension—how it builds up in the body and blocks your ability to think clearly, connect deeply, and easily move through life.
Your body is like a map, constantly sending you signals about where you’re stuck, stressed, or out of alignment.
When you feel tightness in your shoulders, it might be a sign you’re carrying emotional burdens that aren’t yours. A stiff neck could reflect overthinking or resistance to change. Hips that feel locked up? That could be unprocessed fear or sadness.
It’s not just about the physical—it’s about what your body is trying to tell you.
As I learned, “Your issues live in your tissues.”
That realization set me on a path of deep healing, not just physically but emotionally, mentally and spiritually. I’m sharing this with you because I know how easy it is to carry tension and stress into a new year and repeat the same patterns.
What if, this year, you freed yourself from that cycle?
🎯 Start by Noticing
Here’s the thing: your body holds onto everything—stress, emotions, physical trauma, even old beliefs. And if you’re not actively working to release it, that tension builds up.
Take a moment right now. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and scan your body. Where are you holding tension?
Maybe it’s your shoulders, neck, or lower back. Wherever it is, your body tells you it’s time to let go.
🧘♀️ How to Release Tension in Body with Simple Practices
Over the years, I’ve tried everything to free my body from tension. What worked for me are gentle, consistent practices that anyone can do, no equipment needed. These are great ways to start your new year.
Here are a few to get you started:
- Joint Circles:
Gently rotate your neck, shoulders, wrists, and ankles. Notice where you feel resistance or hear a little “pop.” These circles encourage blood flow and create space for movement.

- Shaking It Out:
Stand up and shake your hands, arms, and legs. Let your body move intuitively. Shaking releases built-up energy and helps reset your nervous system.

- Tai Chi Swing:
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Let your arms swing gently from side to side, following your body’s natural rhythm. This practice is grounding and helps loosen your spine.

Pro Tip: Sync these movements with your breath. Inhale as you move and exhale as you release. This creates more space and helps calm your nervous system.
🔄 Commit to Movement
Now that you know what works for you, the key is consistency. Here’s how you can make it part of your new year routine:
- Add it to your morning or evening rituals to start or end your day with ease.
- Couple it with daily activities like brewing your coffee or waiting for your computer to boot up.
- Schedule “movement snacks” throughout your day—a minute or two every hour.
Start small, even a minute or two, and build from there. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s to give your body what it needs to feel free.
