From Proving Others Wrong to Living in Alignment: How Intrinsic Motivation Leads to True Success
I heard a college coach say his team was motivated to win because they “made it personal.” He used that to drive their motivation.
Someone on the other team was talking trash, and the coach used it to fuel his players. They bought in, played with fire, and won.
You might think, “That’s brilliant!”

But I’ve learned it’s actually the opposite. And there’s a better way to motivate yourself.
As a former college athlete, I know how to take things personally. I lived to prove people wrong, and that strategy worked for a long time.
When I was recruited to play lacrosse in high school, a coach told me I couldn’t shoot. The following year, we played his team—and I scored. As I shook his hand at the end of the game, I smiled and said, “Guess I can shoot after all.”
That moment wasn’t just a win on the field—it was a win for my ego.

That pattern continued when I started my career. Sales became my new arena. Comments like “You’re not good enough” motivated me, and I made it my mission to prove everyone wrong.
And I did. I outsold everyone, became a top performer, and eventually ran the entire sales team.
For years, I wore those victories like a badge of honor. I thought This is what success looks like. This is what it takes.
But then I started asking myself some hard questions:
- Do I really want to go through life trying to prove others wrong?
- What happens when there’s no one left to prove wrong?
- Am I okay with being driven by anger, fear, or resentment?
I realized that kind of motivation was exhausting, unsustainable, and, in the long run, unfulfilling. It didn’t feel like success—it felt like survival.
And that’s when everything shifted.

A New Way to Define Success
I began to understand that I didn’t have to rely on negativity or external validation to fuel my ambition. I could define success for myself and align my actions with what truly mattered to me.
That realization led me to explore intrinsic motivation—the kind that comes from within. It’s about being driven by your values, not by someone else’s judgments.
When you align your life with your values, every day feels motivating and purposeful. You don’t need someone to tell you you’re “not good enough” to light a fire under you. Your values become your fuel.
Shifting from External to Internal Motivation
This didn’t happen overnight. It’s a practice—a daily commitment to break free from old patterns.
Here’s how I did it:
Step 1: Awareness
The first step is noticing when you’re being driven by external validation or negative emotions.
Start paying attention to your thoughts:
- Are you acting out of fear of failure?
- Are you trying to prove someone wrong?
Simply noticing these patterns is the beginning of breaking free.
Step 2: Presence
Negative emotions often pull you into the past (regret) or the future (worry). Engage your senses to bring yourself back to the present.
- Rub your thumb and forefinger together and feel the ridges of your skin.
- Take a deep breath and notice the sensation of air moving through your nostrils
Step 3: Forgiveness
Don’t beat yourself up for falling into old patterns. These habits have been with you for years. Forgive yourself and remind yourself that growth is a journey, not a destination.
Step 4: Practice
Repetition is key. Keep practicing awareness, presence, and forgiveness. The more you do, the easier it becomes to shift your mindset.
Step 5: Activate Your Values
This is a game-changer. Knowing your core values allows you to understand what drives you, and you no longer need external validation to feel successful.
The Power of Living in Alignment to Increase Motivation
Here’s the secret: you can still be successful without chasing approval or being fueled by negativity.
I’m still ambitious. I still set big goals and work hard to achieve them. But now, my motivation comes from within. I’m driven by my values—not by someone else’s expectations of what I should be.
That shift has been life-changing, not just for me but also for the people I coach and support. It’s incredible to see what’s possible when you release what doesn’t serve you and start living in alignment with your authentic self.
