Discover the Wild Within: My Transformative Journey with a Mustang and the Life Lessons I Gained
Being face-to-face with a wild animal makes you feel fear and face the wildness in you. Whether it’s a deer, snake, chipmunk, mustang or cougar – wild animals evoke a response when you’re in their presence.
My 24-day Wild Mustang Adventure allowed me to see the wild within myself and tamed the parts of me that were too rigid.
Once we were off the snowstorm mountains (🥶read part 1 if you missed it) and on the training ranch in Montana, everything started to shift when we met our Mustangs.
Most were already paired, but I was invited to choose between 3 beautiful boys. As I walked past their pens and heard their stories, I waited to see if I felt something and just listened.
First, nothing.
Second, was sweet but not my guy.
Third, I KNEW IN SECONDS! FULL BODY YES! ✨
(A few minutes after meeting my Mustang and getting to feed him through the fence)
2220 was meant for me! You see, when Mustangs are rounded up (typically in really awful ways), they aren’t given names. Like the prisoners they are, they’re given a number to wear around their neck.
And as soon as I heard that number and saw his face, it was a divine connection. ✨
222 = Angel Number
20 = James’ lacrosse number and our anniversary
220 = House number of our ranch
They didn’t even finish talking about him before I yelled out, “YES! He’s the one for me! I’d like to work with him, please!” It was destiny.
His name was just as obvious to me after our first gentling session when EVERYONE was talking about how handsome, gorgeous, and good-looking he was. I IMMEDIATELY knew!
He was Norby. 💙
Named after my great uncle Norbert, who was so handsome that people were constantly telling him he should have been a cowboy model. His spirit (and his legacy ranch I get to live on now) was with me through my Mustang.
(Norby’s tag draped over a picture of me and my Uncle Norby on my first visit out west)
In the days that followed, with each milestone I reached with Norby, another pound of grief and sorrow was shed from what was weighing on my soul when I arrived. More profound and nourishing (and draining) in a way I’d never felt before.
His wildness untamed my rigid ways. His sensitivities helped me see the superpower on my own, and his expressiveness made me express myself more clearly.
And I know you can relate to your own journey when an animal or human enters your life and makes you look at everything ever so slightly differently now, never again through the same lens.
Here are 3 pieces of wisdom I gained in our journey together that can serve both the wild and tamed sides of you, too.
-
🤝Mutual trust comes faster when you listen and respond with respect.
Wild animals (including humans) have 4 energetic responses to fear: freeze, fight, flight, and fawn. You probably know the first 3, but the last one is less known. Fawning is when you do what’s being asked of you to satiate someone else’s demands but are scared inside about it.
In human terms, this might be when you really don’t want to hang out with your judgmental in-laws, but you slap on a smile and pretend you’re having fun when you’re actually miserable.
So, when it came to creating a relationship built on two-way communication, it was vital to listen to what Norby was telling me (by looking at his ears, eyes, neck position, mouth, and movement). When a fear response was happening, I had to stick to it—ending with relaxation was the reward for both of us.
It makes me think of how often you walk (or run) away from an uncomfortable conversation only to hold onto its tense energy for a lifetime. Whereas, if you stayed in the conversation until there was a sense of relief there’s nothing but positive energy to hold onto.
Imagine how different your life would be if you were in an uncomfortable trigger and chose to stick it out through the mucky middle until you got to a soft landing.
It might seem impossible in the beginning. But in time, with a loving teacher, it gets easier, and you can become a leader in your ability to be an island of peace in a sea of chaos for yourself and others.
-
🎈Your burdens can be lifted by someone who never created them.
Horses’ hearts are so big that they literally have an impact on the rhythm of your human heartbeat. Helping to regulate you into higher heart coherence by simply being in your energy field. So scientifically, with each heartbeat, they are helping to ground you.
And like babies, animals have a way of telling you the truth that’s undeniable. If they’re happy or joyful, it’s easy to feel that wash over you. And let me tell you, Norby is a JOYFUL little 2-year old.
His curiosity and eagerness washed over my burdens in a way that rejuvenated my spirit and made me more curious and eager.
Imagine how different the weight of your burdens would be if you had high-frequency positive energy from those (wild and domesticated) beings around you.
You can choose if you surround yourself with people and animals who ignite curiosity and eagerness or fear and doubt – so choose wisely!

🕊️There are always signs if you choose to see them.
As you heard, with Norby’s tag number and gorgeous connection to my uncle – there are ALWAYS signs. You just have to choose them. I used to think of them as coincidences, but over time, I realized how much magic in life I was missing out on.
Wanna know the coolest?
Norby has a noticeable short tail. Like half the length of a regular-sized horsetail. Turns out it was chewed off by another horse while he was in holding.
Wellll… For years now, I’ve been talking about how I needed to get my tattoo fixed because the tail was oddly short.
When I was processing my Mustang adventure, I happened to look at my arm and started to cry. I realized there was NOTHING to be fixed about my tattoo and that Norby had been permanently added to my body, FOUR FLIPPIN’ YEARS AGO!
Imagine if you chose to look for, see, and cherish the signs the universe is constantly giving you. How much more joy and faith would you have that everything is working out?

In this process of attempting to pull the biggest milestone moments to share, it really could be a whole short story. And I hope you’ve enjoyed it so far because, either way, you’re getting another bite-sized piece of wisdom and stories next week! 🤣
