How Being Witnessed Helps You Heal After Gaslighting
Have you ever felt like your reality was dismissed, twisted, or denied? Gaslighting can leave you questioning your truth, feeling invisible, and drained of trust in yourself. But there’s a way out—through the transformative power of being witnessed.
Let’s just say, I’ve had my fair share of being gaslit. From my childhood abuse being denied and dismissed. To my business coach, taking my deepest wounds and using them as weapons. I’ve had profound and minor experiences where people actively twisted the truth and lied to have control over the narrative.
That’s the thing with narcissists, the Kings and Queens of Gaslighting. They do everything in their power to make sure you’re the villain and they’re innocent in the story of what happened. And if you don’t have self-confidence or a rational eye-witness, it’s easy to fall into that trap of second-guessing yourself and wondering if you were taking crazy pills.

The Scars of Gaslighting
Gaslighting erodes your sense of self, leaving you isolated and doubting your reality. It’s not just manipulation—it’s a theft of your voice.
Studies suggest over 40% of people have experienced gaslighting in relationships or workplaces, often leading to anxiety, depression, or chronic self-doubt.
The antidote? Being witnessed—having someone validate your truth without judgment. This simple act can rebuild trust in yourself and light the path to healing.
The first time I was witnessed was in therapy. I’ll never forget the day she said, “MaryBeth, clinically speaking, you’ve been physically, mentally, and emotionally abused and neglected.”
My initial response? I told her that it couldn’t be true.
The gaslighting had been so effective that I actually believed that I was just too sensitive instead of deeply wounded from abuse.
I was protecting my own hell by denying the truth. But in time, I trusted that my clinician actually knew what she was talking about, her witnessing me was the beginning of real change.
The Power of Being Witnessed
Being witnessed means having your experiences acknowledged with compassion. It’s not about fixing you—it’s about seeing you. This validation can shift you from self-doubt to self-trust, from isolation to connection. Imagine someone truly hearing your story, reflecting your truth back to you. That’s where healing begins. It’s how you reclaim your voice and start building a life that feels authentic and whole.
Just recently, my in-laws visited us out west and they witnessed first-hand the trauma and drama. In my 40+ years, I’d never had sane adults witness these toxic dynamics before.
And it created the most profound healing to have others say, “That was not okay. This is not a healthy environment. You don’t deserve to be treated like that. And I will not accept apologies without changed behavior.”
In a sea of chaos, it was like the skies parted, angels sang, and my heart was seen, heard, and honored for the truth.
It supercharged my ability to take my power back and no longer participate in toxic dynamics that are out of my control. And I want that for you, too.
