How to Improve Your Mental Health: Real Talk, Daily Tools, and Support for High Achievers

🧘‍♀️ Let’s Talk About Mental Health (For Real)

May is Mental Health Awareness Month—a time to break the silence, reduce the stigma, and tell the truth about what it really means to care for your mind and spirit.

And I want to start by sharing something personal with you:

I’ve struggled with my own mental health from as early as I can remember. I was a sensitive kid who was physically, mentally, and emotionally abused by people who were mentally ill. And I kept it a secret because I was told that if I said anything, my parents would get a divorce and it would be my fault.

That type of weight is extremely heavy to carry untreated as a kid, adolescent and adult. The silence and secrecy of it all start to eat you up from the inside. No matter how good you get at numbing.

For me, it manifested in awful self-hate, extreme expectations for perfectionism, an eating disorder, and a heavy dose of dissociation.

I finally got treatment when my self-abuse and insomnia were so bad that I was at a breaking point nearly a decade ago.

My mind was constantly beating me up and I had no idea what step one was to change that. So I got professional support and that was the beginning of taking my power back, one mindset shift at a time.

The truth is: mental health challenges don’t always look like a breakdown.

Sometimes they look like:

❌ Saying “I’m fine” when you’re anything but
❌ Smiling through burnout
❌ Feeling like you’ve lost yourself in the noise
❌ People-pleasing until you’re empty
❌ Waking up already exhausted

And you are far from alone.

📊 Here’s What the Data Says:

  • 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. lives with a mental illness (NAMI)
  • 75%+ of employees report struggling with their mental health this year (Mind Share Partners)
  • High-achievers are more likely to mask their symptoms and avoid support until they hit a breaking point
  • Chronic stress literally shuts down your brain’s ability to focus, rest, and regulate (NIH)

This isn’t just hard—it’s unsustainable.

But there is a way forward.

💛 3 Things You Can Do Today to Support Your Mental Health Today:

✅ Name what you’re feeling.

Say it out loud or write it down: “I’m anxious.” “I’m overwhelmed.” Research shows that naming emotions helps calm your nervous system and reduce the charge. It’s much better than masking it and just hoping it goes away.

Bonus Ninja Level: Completely remove it from your identity and say, “anxiety is present here” vs ” I’m anxious”. It’s another level of noticing but not owning it as who you are.

✅ Set a values-driven boundary.

What would support you in shifting your feelings towards something that would serve you? How might you ensure that happens by setting a values-driven boundary? “I’m going to activate my value of Organization and make a list of everything on my plate.” “I’ll activate my value of Inner Harmony by putting myself to bed earlier tonight.”

✅ Ask for what you need.

Whether it’s time, support, or space—speaking up isn’t selfish. It’s essential. Your needs are valid. And asking for them is a form of self-respect. Getting professional support is what changed my life for the better and I trust it could for you two.
