When Your Emotions Get Loud, Your Heart Gets Quiet

When your emotions get loud, your heart gets quiet. Written by James Hyland

Why We Shut Down Emotionally (And How to Reconnect With Your Heart)

Big emotions can be powerful teachers.

They can also be powerful blockers because when stress, anxiety, frustration, or anger gets loud, it can pull you out of your heart…and straight into your head.

A few years ago, MaryBeth (my wife) and I were sitting on the couch talking about commitments I’d made in our business that I hadn’t kept. The conversation was familiar, and so was the feeling rising in my chest.

I didn’t know what to say.
I felt ashamed.
And then my mind went blank.

I shut down.

If you’ve ever shut down, you know the experience. It’s like you disappear inside yourself. Part of you wants to be alone in a cave. Part of you hopes the moment will pass…or someone else will tie a bow on it so you can move on.

That’s what heavy emotion can do: they disconnect you.
>From the person in front of you.
>From your voice.
>From your heart.

We sat there in silence until MaryBeth said something that cut through the fog:

“Even if you don’t know what to say…you can say that.”

In other words, you don’t need the perfect sentence. You need the honest one.

MaryBeth has been one of my greatest teachers. She has a way of pointing me back toward honesty and connection.

But if I’m being real, it wasn’t always easy for me to hear it or take action. Even though I consciously wanted to change, something was off subconsciously. There was this deep block inside of me, and when those emotions came up, part of me just wanted to retreat into the darkness instead of facing what was there.

The journey from head to heart✨

A quote I’ve come back to again and again in moments like this is:

“The longest journey you’ll ever go on is from your head to your heart.”

For most of my life, I lived in my head, planning, rationalizing, trying to control outcomes, taking things personally, letting fear drive the bus. And when emotions surged, my head got even louder.

Over time, I noticed something simple and life-changing:
When I listened to my head, I felt tight, fearful, angry, and reactive.
When I listened to my heart, I felt calmer, clearer, and more aligned, even if the choice was uncomfortable.

So the real question became: How do you reconnect with your heart when emotions block the path?

What helped me: releasing what was “stuck” around my heart.

There are many ways back: breath, movement, meditation, nature, prayer, and honest conversation.

One of the biggest shifts for me came from releasing my heart wall. Which is a buildup of trapped negative emotions around your heart that the subconscious uses as a protective barrier after heartbreak, trauma, or long stretches of overwhelm.

Protection sounds helpful… until it keeps you from feeling at all.

My shutdown wasn’t a character flaw.
It was my nervous system doing what it learned to do: go numb to stay safe.

Since becoming a certified Emotion Code, Body Code, and Belief Code practitioner, I’ve supported humans and animals in releasing that emotional weight in their heart wall, especially the kind that quietly blocks connection, vulnerability, and heart-truth.

What changed after releasing my heart wall

Hard conversations didn’t magically disappear.

But I stopped disappearing inside them.

Instead of retreating into my cave and dissociating, I stay present. And even when I don’t know what to say right away, I can keep the connection alive with something true, like:

“I appreciate you sharing this. I need time to process, and I’ll get back to you this afternoon.”

When the emotional charge is lower, your heart becomes easier to hear.

A couple of clients described it like this after getting their heart wall removed:

  • “I really softened and felt a sense of love and connection again, which I hadn’t felt in so long.” — Cameron P.
  • “I felt a sense of lightness and openness throughout my body.” — Karey R.
  • “As emotions were released, I started to smile as I felt a weight being lifted off me and electricity moving throughout my body.” – Becky L.

If you’ve been feeling emotionally heavy…

Just know this: your heart isn’t gone. It’s just hidden underneath this barrier.
And as that barrier lifts, your heart gets louder again.
