Replace Your Numbing with This!

rHow I Used the Emotion Code to Stop Emotional Numbing and Start Healing

Back in college and into my early 30s, I drank a lot.

At first, it felt normal. I was a college athlete, surrounded by a culture that glorified partying. It was expected. Celebrated. I worked hard, played hard, and partied harder.

But underneath the surface?

I was numbing. Escaping. Trying to silence emotions I didn’t know how to process.

I didn’t have any tools to handle what I was feeling, and instead of expressing those emotions, I buried them. My go-to strategy? Binge drinking. It helped me feel like I was escaping the chaos inside. But the truth is—those feelings never really went away.

They just got trapped.

And eventually, they’d explode.

I punched walls. Lost relationships. Got a DUI. And even MaryBeth (my now-wife) broke up with me because she couldn’t take it anymore. I thought drinking to numb and escape was helping me, but it was slowly destroying everything I cared about.

Fast-forward to today…

I can still enjoy a drink to celebrate. I haven’t sworn off alcohol entirely (although I have gone years without it), but I no longer use alcohol to numb or need it to cope. And that’s because I’ve found a healthier, more sustainable way to release what I used to bury.

That tool? The Emotion Code.

From Bottled Emotions to Real-Time Release

Years ago, I learned about how our bodies carry unprocessed emotional experiences. I had already made huge progress in my healing journey—through therapy, mindfulness, and living my values—but there were still moments where my emotions would hijack me.

Something or someone would trigger me and I would shut down and go deep into a cave inside of myself.

Then my old internal programming—perfectionism, people-pleasing, self-judgment, victimhood—would take over, and the old urge to escape would creep back in.

My bottled-up emotions made me reach for the bottle. Drowning out their messages.

Now? I pause. Become aware of what is going on. Forgive myself for what is happening.

And then, I release that bottled-up tension in my body with the Emotion Code.

What Is the Emotion Code?

And one of the best things about the Emotion Code is that it can be done remotely.

The Emotion Code is an energy healing technique developed by Dr. Bradley Nelson. It’s designed to help you release trapped emotional energy—the kind that’s often stuck beneath the surface from past pain, stress, trauma, or being triggered.

What makes it so effective is its simplicity. Through muscle testing and a structured process, I pinpoint and clear the emotional baggage.

So instead of reaching for a drink… or checking out… or going into a spiral of shame or blame… I release the emotion directly.

Here’s what that looks like in real life:

  • A wave of sadness hits me out of nowhere from an experience. I check in, identify the emotion, and clear it.
  • I start to shut down because someone has triggered me in a conversation. I pause, find the emotion, and release it.
  • I feel overwhelmed for “no reason.” I trust there is a reason—one I can now address and let go of.

It’s not about being emotionless. It’s about being free from stuck and stagnant emotions that aren’t serving me.

From Numbing to Noticing to Releasing

The difference between who I was and who I am now isn’t that I stopped having feelings and emotions. It’s that I stopped running from them.

And the Emotion Code gave me the tools to notice, understand, and release the energy behind them, without judgment, shame, or escape.

It’s transformed how I relate to myself.

And it’s transformed how I show up in my relationships, my work, and my everyday life.

Who the Emotion Code Can Help

Since becoming certified in the Emotion Code, I’ve done over 350 sessions for humans and animals alike. And I’ve seen powerful shifts from people who:

  • Feel stuck in cycles of overthinking, procrastination, or self-doubt
  • Get emotionally hijacked by “small” things they know are actually big triggers
  • Struggle with fear, anxiety, restlessness, or emotional fatigue
  • Want to let go of past pain from a breakup, a job loss, or childhood wounds
  • Carry tension or tightness in their body, they can’t seem to shake it

Here is what one of my clients, Anja, said about our work together…

“My entire life, I’ve panicked when I see spiders, especially in the house. Over one Emotion Code session with James, he released that fearful energy. Now, instead of screaming for help, I carry spiders out in a glass and feel totally safe and comfortable doing it. I even watch them as interesting creatures that must be more afraid of me than I am of them. It’s been life-changing.”
