Transform Your Events into Unforgettable Experiences: Elevate Engagement and Impact

Experiences shape our lives and develop our sense of self and community. When an organization truly understands the difference between typical events and meaningful experiences, it is already leagues ahead in the sea of competing calendar requests. Knowing how to elevate your event experiences is critical.

Arguably, some folks believe that “event” and “experience” are interchangeable words. In the context of our work at SparkVision – that is not the case. So let’s start by defining what we mean:

An EVENT is a planned public or social occasion.                                                              An EXPERIENCE is an occurrence that leaves an impression and solicits an emotion in someone.

Most people think of an event as a list of “to dos” (logistical items) that need to be completed by a certain time. Some typical items on event planning lists are booking a venue, setting a theme, developing a timeline, and securing volunteers.

While those items definitely need to happen, they neglect to address the emotional side of the event. If you want to leave a lasting impression on your attendees, you cannot rely on a traditional task list to make that happen.

Here are ten event experiences questions that (if you can positively answer) will help to elevate your event into an experience:

  1. How are people being engaged before the event begins?
  2. Does the theme have a meaningful tie to the purpose of the gathering?
  3. Who is cultivating attendees during the event?
  4. Are there emotional highs and lows?
  5. If intended, how are people learning about your work?
  6. What feelings might you be conjuring up for attendees throughout the event?
  7. Is there a balance of information, cultivation and fun?
  8. Have you made an emotional map that follows your run of show?
  9. Is your call to action clear and attainable?
  10. What type of follow up is happening to keep attendees attention after the event?

There is a delicate and important balance of fun, information, and cultivation needed to ignite advocates for your cause. So, if you plan to spend valuable resources bringing people together, make sure you’re really getting the most out of those efforts by creating event experiences people won’t forget!
