Rewild Yourself: 3 Powerful Self-Regulation Tools Inspired by Wild Mustangs for Inner Strength and Emotional Balance
Imagine standing before a 1,000+-pound wild animal, knowing they have never interacted with humans before. It’s an intense, high-stakes moment. Energetically, it’s just like when you’re about to give a presentation, set a boundary with a loved one, or face a difficult decision.
This past summer, I went on a transformative adventure working with wild Mustangs in Montana. Over 24 days, I connected with these magnificent creatures in deeper ways than I’ve ever connected in my life. But one Mustang, Norby, changed my life forever.
Looking back, this journey wasn’t about taming Mustangs. It was about rewilding myself. And taming my own inner chaos to reclaim my authentic power.
And Norby was my guide.
In the face of his fears and sensitivities, we formed a deep bond. But our connection didn’t happen overnight. It required major investments in self-regulation to be a vessel of calm and trusting energy between us. Especially because I was a newbie to all of this and had my own fears and sensitivities!
At times, I felt like I’d earned a gold medal for the Emotional Intelligence Olympics. And others, I felt like a total failure. But in the end, I always returned to my tools to get back in alignment and regulate myself.
I want to share three powerful self-regulation tools that helped me manage my energy and emotions, even in the most overwhelming moments.
These 3 (well kinda like 6 ?) self-regulation tools will bring you peace, not panic, in your daily life:
1. ?Intentions + ?️Visualization
Working with Norby taught me the power of setting clear intentions and visualizing success. One day, I noticed that while the other Mustangs were lying down during training—demonstrating extreme trust—Norby hadn’t gotten to that place with me yet.
Before our next session, I set an intention: to create a space of safety where he could fully relax and trust me. I visualized him lying down peacefully.
Then, just minutes into our session, Norby lay down next to me. This wasn’t a coincidence—it was the result of focusing on a clear intention and then visualizing it happening.
How to Use It:
- Set a clear intention (what you want to happen) and include how you want to feel as a result (e.g., grounded, calm, or confident).“My intention is to have a meaningful conversation about boundaries with my mother so that we both feel seen, heard and understood.”
- Close your eyes and visualize yourself achieving that intention step-by-step. Play a movie in your mind with you as the star.
- Picture the outcome as if it has already happened. Law of attraction, baby!
Try this before your next high-stakes conversation, meeting, or personal challenge. You’ll be amazed at how much power your mind holds when you channel it intentionally.
2. ?️Breathing + ?Affirmations
When working with wild animals (or navigating any high-stress situation), it’s easy to let fear take over. I remember a day when Norby got spooked and started rearing up. My instinct was to panic, but I knew I had to stay grounded—for both of us.
In that moment, I turned to my breath. Slowly, I inhaled and exhaled through my nose, sending my breath deep into my belly. As I breathed, I repeated the affirmation: I am an island of peace. This grounded me in calm energy, and Norby quickly settled down. Just. Like.That.
How to Use It:
- In stressful moments, pause and take deep breaths through your nose, allowing your belly to expand.
- Feel yourself slowing down and grounding.
- Combine your breathing with affirmations like, “I am an island of peace,” or “I am a lighthouse of possibility.”
This simple practice shifts you from a reactive state to a responsive one, helping you regain control over your energy.
3. ?Mindset + ?Boundaries
Mindset plays a huge role in self-regulation. During my time with Norby, he started showing signs of what the instructors labeled “behavioral issues.” They believed he was becoming too reactive and was “naughty.” I started to believe it, too, until I realized something: Norby wasn’t misbehaving; he was absorbing the fear and energy of the other Mustangs around him.
Once I shifted my mindset from seeing him as a “problem horse” to recognizing his sensitivity, everything changed. Even though I was not the expert in the room, I knew I had to speak up. I set a boundary with the instructors, advocating for them to check in on his energy with absorbed emotions from other Mustangs. Thank goodness this was a place with both an animal communicator AND an Emotion and Body Code trainer.
They listened to me. Checked in. And said I was right. Norby was absorbing the fears from mustangs around him and needed a different approach to his training.
How amazing is that? All it took was changing my mindset and speaking up to set a healthy boundary.
How to Use It:
- Shift your mindset from seeing obstacles as problems to seeing them as opportunities for growth and curiosity.
- Set clear boundaries for yourself and others to advocate for your truth. Boundaries create the space for peace, growth, and freedom.
When you change your mindset and set healthy boundaries, you reclaim your power and open up new possibilities for yourself and those around you. Boundaries are the keys to freedom. But most people are unsure of how to set them or feel they deserve to.
