To Cry or Be Calm

How to Set Your Energy Each Morning for a Calmer, More Intentional Day

Many years ago, I learned a life lesson that changed my perspective forever. It’s one that’s proven valuable in so many situations since then.

Picture this: We were watching our friend’s toddler play in a kiddie pool. At one point, the toddler tripped and fell in. We quickly helped them up and stayed calm and cool.

Although shocked, the kiddo immediately recovered and went right back to playing.

A little while later, her mom joined us, and her child fell in again.

This time, her mom grabbed them and started freaking out, and so did the child. They began screaming and crying, completely distraught.

But here’s the thing…

The child was physically fine in both situations.

So why was one response calm and the other total chaos?

Because they picked up on the energy of the people around them.

I see this energy exchange all the time now that I’m a horse parent. 🐴 My boys, Norby and Ollie, are incredibly sensitive and react to even the slightest things that could spook them.

When I’m calm, they’re calm. But when I’m anxious, tense, or distracted?

You guessed it, they sense it too.

And when it’s 1,000+ pounds of reactive energy standing next to you, it can become legitimately dangerous.

It’s quite the mindfulness practice.

And it’s taught me this: Your energy influences everything and everyone around you.

The energy you bring into your day affects how you respond, how you lead, how you communicate, how you handle stress, and how others experience you.

Which is why how you begin your day matters so much. Because most people don’t intentionally set their energy in the morning.

You wake up, grab your phone, check the news, scan your messages, look at your calendar, and before they know it, the world has already decided how you’re going to feel.

Stressed. Behind. Reactive. Pulled in ten different directions.

And then you carry that energy into your conversations, decisions, work, family, and body.

But it doesn’t have to be that way. You can start your day differently.

You can take a few minutes in the morning to breathe, ground yourself, set an intention, and choose the energy you want to carry before the world gets its hands on you.

Here are a few simple ways to practice that.

  1. 🧭 Get clear on your intention

Before you jump into the demands of the day, take a moment to ask yourself:

“How do I want to show up today?” “What would make today great?”

Maybe your intention is to stay calm. Maybe it’s to be present. Maybe it’s to lead with patience, communicate clearly, trust yourself, or move through the day with more ease.

Having a clear intention acts as your compass.

So when stress pops up, when plans change, when someone needs something from you, or when your mind starts racing, you have something steady to return to.

Your intention reminds you who you want to be before the day pulls you into old patterns.

  2. ⚓ Use an affirmation to anchor your energy

When your mind starts running through doubts, stress, or all the things you need to do, an affirmation can help bring you back to yourself.

Affirmations are simple, powerful statements that remind you of the energy you’re choosing.

My favorite lately is “I am happy. I am healthy. I am whole.”

Repeating this in the morning helps me remember that I don’t have to absorb fear, doubt, or all the chaos around me.

I can choose to be happy, healthy, and whole in every moment.

  3. 🌬️ Remember to breathe

I love the saying: “Anxiety is excitement without breath.”

When you’re stressed or overwhelmed, your natural reaction is often to hold your breath, which only makes everything feel more intense. Breathing is one of the simplest and most powerful tools for returning to calm.

When I notice my horses getting spooked, I often realize I’m unintentionally holding my breath too. It’s only when I take a big exhale that we both start to relax.

The same is true in everyday life.

Before the meeting, a hard conversation or opening your inbox.

Take a breath. Set your energy. Come back to yourself.

Starting your day off with good energy is exactly why we created the DailySpark.

Because the way you start your day shapes the way you move through your day.

And you don’t need an hour-long morning routine to feel grounded.
